Would You Pay $500 For A Camping Chair ?

In theory, camping should be a very inexpensive activity since you are literally sleeping on the ground. But as with everything in modern day society, the simpler it appears the more expensive it actually is. Most people see the activity of loading up their SUV with a mountain of camping gear ( just so they'd spend a night or two in the woods ) as the highlight of their camping trip.

Plus, ( some ) camping gear nowadays is getting ridiculously expensive !

Like this carbon fiber camp chair from GCI Outdoor for merley ... $500 (!!!)

Many outdoor brands have spent a lot of time and energy in the past several years moving its customer base to “premium prices”, developing a series of innovations that have increased the quality of its technical brands while helping customers justify the higher price tags.

The fact is, the average price for GCI Outdoor products is $20-$60, but moving their customers to $500 mark is a bit too far in my opinion, and neither its material ( carbon fiber ), nor its weight capacity ( their "selling point" ) can justify the price.

But if you know anything about (retail) business/marketing, it's believed that there’s a bias among consumers that higher-priced items are of higher quality, and right now, those premium products are absolutely driving the sports/outdoors market. Consumers believe the more-expensive products are better.

So, I'm sure there is the market for the type of outdoor loving consumers who can afford paying $500 for a chair.

For the rest of us, there are always more affordable options :
