Bucket list Ideas : Volcano Boarding In Nicaragua !

volcano boarding in nicaragua

Believe it or not, "volcano tourism" is a popular, and growing travel trend. Every year millions of tourists make active and dormant volcanic areas their preferred destination, either for recreational purposes and sightseeing, or perhaps as an adventure trip involving more extreme activities such as hiking, climbing, camping, taking a hot air balloon trip over volcanic landforms like in Capadoccia, Turkey.

But recently, one activity/adventure has become especially popular - volcano boarding !

Surfing China's Tidal Bore

tidal bore surfing

I already wrote about this unique natural phenomena - tidal bores.
Bores occur in relatively few locations worldwide, and recently surfing/SUPing world was introduced to a few of them: the Turnagain arm of Cook Inlet in Alaska and "The Seven Ghosts" deep in the heart of the Indonesian jungle.

And below is a great video from Silver Dragon Surfing Championships 2011 that took place on the Qiantang River in Haining. The extraordinary tides of the Qiantang River are a world-renowned natural wonder. Millions of tourists from China and overseas are drawn to the city of Haining in Zhejiang province every year to witness one of China's most unusual and spectacular sights - the amazing surging tides of the Qiantang River.

The river features the world's largest tidal bore with waves that travel up to 40 kilometers per hour and up to 9 meters high:

Why You Should Bring Your Own Snorkeling Gear On Your Next Tropical Vacation

No comments:
best snorkeling gear near me

Love traveling, and watersports ? Don't forget to bring your snorkeling gear to your next vacation !

Here is why :

My trip to Mexico was the second time I regretted not bringing my own snorkel gear with me. My fins are old, heavy, all-rubber ones, not really comfortable for tropical diving/snorkeling ( since tropical divers do not always need wetsuit booties, many use long, full-foot light pocket fins while diving in tropical water ). Also, I wanted to travel light, and knew that most dive schools provided all the gear for their trips.

But even if you're not a diver, in places like Mexico ( Hawaii or Florida's Keys ) there are many great places where you can go snorkeling.

Of course, you can always rent a snorkeling set ( mask, snorkel and fins ), or even buy a brand new one at a local WallMart. But having you own snorkel gear means you’ll have one less thing to do when you get to your destination. In other words, you’ll be at the beach sooner instead of searching for the rental shop.

I think that if you're a frequent visitor/lover of sunny tropical places ( and love snorkeling/diving/swimming ), investing in a quality snorkel gear set is a must.

As I've mentioned above, full-foot pocket fins are lighter, and sometimes the whole snorkel set will weight about 4 lbs. A set usually comes in a convenient carrying and storage bag, that will easily fit in any suit case.

Also, before I heard people recommend bringing your own snorkel gear because of the hygiene aspect ( Mexico doesn't have the same health & safety rules that you're likely used to at home ). I don't know about you, but for me, there is just something about having your own snorkel in your mouth :) When it comes to masks, aside from the hygiene thing, pink eye can be very nasty.

And finally, the price of the snorkeling set is ( almost ) the same as the price of one (!) "snorkeling tour". So, buying and bringing your own gear will pay off even during a short tropical vacation !!

So, what is the best snorkeling gear out there ?

best snorkeling gear amazon

Should you buy your snorkeling gear from Amazon, Walmart, Costco, or eBay ?

Personally, I always recommend to buy your outdoor gear from Amazon.
Why?

Not only will you have a larger selection of choices, prices, brands, and read the snorkel gear reviews before you buy, but, the most important, after your purchase, and use, you can recommend that gear to your friends, family, and anybody else looking to buy their own snorkeling gear, and MAKE MONEY !

Below, see some of our recommendations, and choose from amongst the choices that we have tried out or from amongst the best sellers from Amazon :

What The Hell Is River Bugging ?

No comments:
Here, I present you another relatively new, crazy, adrenaline-filled water sport -river bugging.
"What is river bugging?" - you ask. In a nutshell, it's river tubing with a twist.

Instead of a tube, you sit in an ... inflatable armchair, pitting your wits (and other parts of your anatomy) against fast-moving rapids, bouncing off rocks and rafting down eddies into icy pools of water below. Your hands are covered in webbed gloves and you also wear short flippers, to help you manoeuvre around the river currents. You also wear the standard "whitewater outfit"- (full body) wetsuit, PFD and a helmet.

Parahawking- Flying Like A Bird...With A Bird.

No comments:

The video below is absolutely beautiful !

When you go parahawking, you are not just flying like a bird - you are flying with one. And there's only one place in the world you can do it: Pokhara, Nepal and doing it is as awesome as it sounds.

If it's too much to digest, let me first explain what parahawking is.
Parahawking is a fusion between Falconry and Paragliding. Falconry is a huntung sport where birds of prey are trained to hunt prey. Parahawking is different, our birds of prey are trained to fly with Paragliders and to guide them to the thermals. Parahawking also gives you a unique opportunity to interact with birds of prey in their own environment.
When parahawking, you soar with trained Egyptian Vultures, which are an exceptionally unique species of bird. Not only are the Egyptian Vultures incredibly intelligent (they're one of two bird species in the world that use tools to source food (they will actually pick up and drop rocks to break into eggs) but they are incredibly energy efficient. The vultures rely on warm pockets of air, called thermals, to achieve lift — allowing them to soar with minimal effort. The higher they soar, the wider their perspective becomes, allowing them to more easily source food. If there are no thermals, the Egyptian Vulture will find a tree to perch on and conserve energy until it's ready to try again.

Diving With Sharks At The Florida Aquarium In Tampa Bay

Florida diving offers something for everyone, from the newbie to the most experienced divers, from coral reef diving to fresh water, wrecks, caverns, 4000 lb statue of Christ of the Abyss to ... diving at the The Florida Aquarium.

I came across this incredible adventure while looking for guided scuba diving trips around Tampa. The Florida Aquarium in Tampa Bay offers two great diving adventures - Swim with the Fishes and ...Dive with the Sharks !

Diving with the great white sharks near the Neptune islands of southern Australia has been on my Bucket List since I first got my PADI Open Water certificate.

But diving with sharks at The Florida Aquarium was no less thrilling.

Land Paddling Around Stanley Park In Vancouver B.C.

No comments:

Vancouver B.C is a very popular tourist destination, and was also named the Top Destination in Canada in TripAdvisor's 2016 Travellers' Choice awards, and was chosen as the best place to live in North America (and number five in the world) in Mercer's 2016 Quality of Living survey.

The city offers travellers both outstanding opportunities for outdoor adventure, as well as sightseeing. Framed by miles of beaches and rugged mountains, with more than 200 parks in between there is never shortage of things to do and to see.

When I first visited Vancouver in 2009, I did all the "regular touristy activities" : explored it's downtown, took a stroll on the famous Capilano Bridge, skied at Grouse Mountain,  had lunch at Granville Island's market, and got schooled at Telus World of Science.

But my most memorable experience was probably biking and hiking around Stanley Park...

From Spain To Portugal By Zipline

No comments:

As I previously wrote, I'm not a big fan of ziplining ( or as it's also called zip trekking ). But I believe it's an awesome way to have fun at a new destination.

Many people simply love riding something that gives them a thrill, an element of danger. Since ziplines travel high in the air above the ground, it is a favorite adventure of those who are somewhat “daredevils.” Even though ziplines are ideal for those who enjoy an element of danger, riding a zipline is completely safe.

And some of the ziplines around the world are absolutely unique and amazing !
Take for example Limite Zero zipline that connects Spain and Portugal !

10 Amazing Places Around The World To Go Ziplining

1 comment:

Don't know about you, but for me, zip-lining is boring. As my favorite TV show characters said : " It was like having the life sucked out of you. That's all it is, sliding down a cable." ( check out the video here, it's hilarious ! ).

Personally, I don't consider zip lining an extreme sport or even an outdoor activity. It's more like a touristy thing to do while visiting a new place. This way, zip lining is a great way to learn about the place you're visiting, while taking in all the beautiful views around you ( and let's face it, a healthy doze of adrenaline hasn't killed anyone yet :)).

My first time trying out zip-lining ( or zip-trekking as they call it in Whistler, BC ) was pretty amazing ! The activity itself ( and being in a tourist group ) did suck the life out of me, but the scenery around was jaw-dropping !

So next time you're traveling and visiting a new place, give zip-lining another chance. It will still suck, but I guarantee  the views will be different !

Below, check out some of the most amazing pictures of places to go zip-lining around the world :

Winter Night River Surfing In Munich

No comments:

I've already written about Munich , Germany as, allegedly, a birth place of river surfing. The landlocked city boasts some of Europe’s best waves. Located in Munich's Englischer Garten Park, the Eisbach wave is probably the most watched and surfed wave in the world. It’s literally surfed 24/7 all months of the year and is located under a road bridge on Prinzregentenstraße.

Diving With... Crocodiles

No comments:

Till recently," diving with sharks ", was the most exhilarating, adrenaline-filled adventure for many recreational divers and thrill seekers. But now, the bar has been raised a little bit higher...
Crocosaurus Cove park, located in Darwin, Australia — offers adventurous visitors a chance to “swim” with saltwater crocodiles inside a five-inch thick, 10ft-tall perspex box which runs along a monorail track across four crocodile enclosures.
A transparent perspex cage, called the "Cage of Death," allows park visitors to get face to face with 1,750-pound, 18-foot long crocodiles while the the 5.31-inch thick cage is immersed inside the crocs' tank.

Too Young To Paraglide ?

No comments:
Kids these days...Start snowboarding while still wearing diapers, by 9 they rock terrain parks with amazing freesking moves, at 12 they fly kites and rip the waves in stormy North Sea.

But how old a kid should be to fly a paraglider ? They say "start them young". But how young ? 15, 16 ? How about 7-10 ? Too young ?

I think this boy is about that age...:

Snow Wakeskating In Bosnia

No comments:

Check out this amazing video of one of crazy Red Bull sponsored athletes Brian Grubb shredding the waters ( and occasional snow ) of the Studeni Potok (translation: 'Icy Creek').

Located in the mountain of Bjelasnica, 25km from Sarajevo and former host to the Winter Olympics, the Studeni Potok is known to the locals as the 'Dragon's Tail', supposedly left in the ground as a mythical beast lumbered toward a nearby village.

Free Skiing In The Urban Ruins Of Industrial Russia

No comments:

The concrete and steel scaffolding of cities has long provided a playground for skateboarders, parkourists, stunt cyclists, and now skiers.

The hardcore Finnish free-ski stylists of the group Nipwitz have stormed the urban landscapes of Northern and Eastern Europe and made them into an insane and fabulous laboratory for their particular brand of renegade sport.

Their most recent video shows a trip that they made to Russia’s Murmansk Oblast, a bizarre and contradictory universe of pristine mountains and industrial wasteland beyond the Arctic Circle.

“One of the first things we noticed here,” says one of the group in idiosyncratic English, “was the surreal contrast between the beautiful Arctic nature and the rottening cityscapes that have suffered from decades of neglection.” Some areas are so polluted that trees can no longer grow there.

In the remote city of Kandalaksha, the Nipwitz crew soars through windows of abandoned buildings, turns high concrete walls into half-pipes, slides down snow-packed staircases, survives an encounter with a knife-wielding man in an army uniform, and gives bored local teenagers something to talk about for many years to come.

River Surfing On The Isar River In Germany

No comments:

It's been a while since I wrote about river surfing, and to my disappointment I still haven't had a chance to try it.

Though, there are a few spots along the Wenatchee River where you could do it, the only time to do that would be during early spring/summer when the snowpack is melting producing nice standing waves.

Unlike in Munich, Germany where you can go river surfing on the Isar River almost any time of the year.

Surfing The Wave Pool In Dubai

No comments:

Pretty soon surfing will be possible anywhere !

The era of the artificial wave is coming. Nearly monthly, the progress toward perfect artificial waves is being made. Surf pools and surf parks are being installed everywhere; from Asia to North America.

Below is a pretty cool video of one of such surf pools in Dubai.

Dubai is truly a “one of a kind” place which could be best described as a bizarre mix of Las Vegas, Mecca and Hong Kong. Surfing in the Persian Gulf can offer really nice mellow waves from November to April, but the swell is unfortunately quite inconsistent.

Ride In An Underground Mountain Biking Park In Kentucky

No comments:
Washington state is a great place to be a mountain biker. With thousands of miles of single track, and numerous mountain bike parks, our state deserves to be called "The Mountain Biking Mecca of Pacific Northwest".

From Stevens Pass mountain bike park ( which is only second after Whistler's ) to a unique urban settings of Colonnade, Washington has a lot to offer to its local riders and the visitors alike.

Yet, Louisville, Kentucky, beat us to something exceptionally extreme and mind blowing - a man-made, underground 320,000 square feet Mega Cavern BMX and mountain biking park !

Tips On Visiting The San Juan Islands

No comments:

The San Juan Island Archipelago consists of a staggering 172 islands, some only visible during extreme low tide, and well over 300 miles of shoreline. The three largest islands are geographically unique: Orcas being the hilliest, Lopez the flattest, and San Juan Island is a combination of both.

Though, there are a few bigger islands that are popular among see kayakers and boaters, the three big ones ( Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan ) are most visited by "leisure travelers" ( with Lopez Island being more popular among "recreational cyclists" ).

Below I want to share a few tips that I wish I new before visiting Orcas and San Juan Islands this September :

1 - When To Go

Any time !  There is no better time than island time !
Ideally, the best time to visit the islands is during summer : the views are simply amazing !
But summertime is also the busiest ( not to mention more expensive ! ). You can always travel during the week, but even that won't guarantee you short lines at the ferry terminal, or a camping spot on the same day.

That's why, for this particular destination, in my opinion, the best time to travel is either early fall or spring.
In Washington state, summer "extends" well into September/October : the weather is still warm, and the sun is still shining ! Plus, it's less crowded, and the hotels and local businesses start charging "off-season" prices.

2 - Taking A Ferry To The Islands

The trip by a ferry is an adventure of its own !
The trip from Anacortes to San Juan island is about an hour long, with a few stops at Shaw, Lopez, and Orcas islands.
In summer time, the lines are long, and you're recommended to arrive to the terminal at least an hour before the departure time.In September we got on a ferry just 30 minutes before its departure.
Though in Anacortes you pay for round trip, if you want to travel from Orcas to San Juan, it will cost extra ~$20 ( round trip ).

3 - Take a car...or not

At some point I was debating whether to take a car or not. Since my son and I were camping for 3 days, and we had our bikes and a kayak with us, I had to take a car.
But some adventurous people do choose to take just a bike to explore the islands. This way, you can pitch a tent at one of many camping spots ( or even better, anywhere by the water ! for FREE ! ), or get a room at a hotel/resort.
Just keep in mind, Oracs Island is considered to be the largest, and the hilliest ( with Mount Constitution at almost exactly a half-mile elevation ). But you always have an option to rent one of the islands' cute scoot-cars from Susie's Mopeds.

4 - Where To Stay

The islands  offer you a whole world of choice when it comes to where you want to stay. Depending on your preferences you can choose from primitive camping to high priced hotels and resorts, or somewhere in between ( B&B's, cabins, bungalows ).
Since the islands are extremely popular, even prices for camping go as high as $25 + per night. Plus, reservations ( even for camping ! ) are recommended week(s) ahead.
But again, in early fall, we were lucky to get a camping spot right by the water on the same day !
