Rock Climbing At Seattle REI

They say that you become a true Washingtonian after the first time you step into REI. The Seattle's flagship store is probably the same symbol of Washington ( outdoors ) as Seattle's Space Needle or Mt Rainier.

What began as a group of 23 mountain climbing buddies is now the nation's largest consumer cooperative.

Everything you need for your most popular outdoor activities- gear for camping, hiking, climbing, cycling, paddling, snow sports, clothing, footwear, and much more- you can find here.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of REI ( mostly because I think it's way overpriced ), but I do have membership with them. Besides the chance to earn dividends on all your purchases you make at  REI at the end of the year, having amazing return policy, ( overpriced but ) quality gear, REI members also enjoy discounts on REI Adventures trips, as well as getting discounts on learning how to climb on their Pinnacle Wall.

At 65 feet high, downtown Seattle's REI Pinnacle is the third tallest indoor climbing structure in the world ! Pinnacle climbers are treated to spectacular views of the Seattle skyline as well as peek-a-boo view of the surrounding mountains on a clear day. The store recently changed its height restriction, making it easier for families with small children (3 ft. and taller) to climb together. Routes vary from easy to expert.

When you purchase REI  membership ( just $20 ), you get 1 free climb on the Pinnacle. All the gear ( shoes, harness, belay device, belayer ) is included.

During their Open Climbs ( Wednesdays 2-3 per month ), you’ll get to climb as much as you can during a two-hour period. Whether you've just learned the basics, are looking to step up your technique, or want to try multiple routes, Open Climbs at the REI Pinnacle are a great way to schedule some practice time. Expert REI Outdoor School instructors will be on hand to belay and offer tips. No previous climbing experience necessary. Pre-registration recommended to guarantee a spot; drop-in’s welcome if there are spots open. Cost: Members: $20 /Nonmembers: $40 (cost includes tax).

So, if you have out-of-state friends who are into outdoors, or friends who just want to try out climbing for the first time, or want to give somebody the gift of adventure, bring them to Seattle's REI ! It's affordable, safe, and lot's of fun !

If it turns out ,climbing is not their cup of tea, you can always try some other outdoor adventure, right there at the store ( hiking or biking , perhaps ? They have mountain biking and hiking trails tight there at the store ! ).
