Journaling Towards Your Dreams

The article below is a guest post by Melanie Bowen, who is a contributor to the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance blog.

In her post she talks about the importance of keeping your dreams/goals/resolutions in writing.

I think that this is THE BIGGEST part of goal setting that most people simply don't understand. Most people don’t bother to write down their goals. Instead, they drift through life aimlessly, wondering why their life lacks purpose and significance.

Don't be one of those people, write them down on a piece of paper, in your Notepad, or start your own blog !

If you are like most people, you have started a journal here and there and then abandoned it when you skipped a few days. The truth of the matter is that almost no one keeps a journal every single day, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t keep one at all! When you are confronted with a challenge, especially strenuous illnesses like breast cancer, mesothelioma or even diabetes, you’ll soon realize journaling may be the tool that gives you the strength that you need. No matter what your prognosis is, learn how journaling can make your dreams and daydreams become a reality.

Think about the written word. You may remember learning how to write, first by printing and then with cursive. Later on, you learned how to type. With writing you learned to communicate with other people, to show them how you look at the world. This is what journaling does, and you’ll find that you can use it as a way to drive your daily activities. Write down what you want you want to do and you’ll find that it becomes a reality. Your desires are written out, and they are much closer to becoming a reality than they ever were when they were just in your head. Ready. Set, Goals!

You are more than your diagnosis; you are a dreamer and a thinker, and beyond that, there are many things that you may want to be. Have you ever wanted to craft, paint, or knit beautiful things that will keep your friends and family warm? Have you ever wanted to read the classics that you missed earlier or have you ever wanted to write a book? Start a journal talking about the desires and what they mean to you. When did they become important to you, and why, after all the years you may have held on to them, are they still important to you? Throughout life’s challenges, maintain clarity and control over your self and your mind.

When you write down your dreams and your desires, you’ll find that you are going to be constantly reminded of your goals. Think about how you will be able to move forward with your plans, knowing that there is something that behind you, that is keeping you on track. After you write down the desires that you have, start to plan out how you are going to achieve them. If you want to write a novel, start thinking about writing groups, plotting and character development. If you want to learn something or go somewhere or try complimentary treatments, look into it! Write about your feelings and that will take you further down your path to wellness. Inspire yourself. Whether it is a personal journal or a public blog, both have their positive returns. Through blogging and connecting with thousands of other people, you can inspire others as well.

Writing is one tool that can help you launch your dreams, and when you are ready to take life by the horns, a written reminder of your hopes may be exactly what you need.
