Autumn Paddleboarding At Owen Beach in Tacoma, WA

Paddleboarding At Owen Beach in Tacoma, WAOwen Beach at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma is a great place year around. Hike along the scenic waterfront promenade to the Boathouse Marina, have a picnic, view ferry boats and fishing craft, or rent a kayak for a few hours of leisure paddling on the sound ( during summer months ).

It was 3 years ago at this very place I learned about stand up paddleboarding ( SUPing ).

Last sunny but cold Saturday , I returned for a short "get to know this place better " trip...

I held pretty close to the shoreline where the current was slower, enjoying the the views of 100-foot tall cliffs.

My destination was a little spot formed of natural clay - a favorite place for local seals to hang out.

Sure thing, when I was approaching the spot, there were about 4-5 seals laying around. But as soon as I got closer, they bailed...all but one

Literally, around the corner you can see the beautiful Tacoma Narrows Bridge. I heard ( and later felt ) that north of Owens Beach the currents were pretty strong. So, I decided to stop here, take a break, and enjoy the views from the distance.
